How to use image to webp
WebP is an option for online images when the publishing system supports it. This workflow re-encodes a static JPEG, PNG or WebP at your chosen WebP quality, keeping the decoded dimensions. It can retain transparent pixels, but the selected mode is lossy and does not promise a smaller or visually identical file.
- Select a static JPG or PNG, or a WebP you intend to re-encode.
- Choose an appropriate WebP quality setting.
- Process and compare the output preview with the source, including small text or transparent edges.
- Check actual bytes and confirm that the receiving system accepts WebP before downloading.
A practical example
For a website product photograph, a WebP result may save bytes compared with its source JPEG. A form accepting only JPG or PNG still needs one of those formats, regardless of whether the WebP is smaller.
Supported files and limitations
- Animated WebP and animated PNG sources are rejected; this is a static-image workflow.
- WebP export depends on browser encoder support. An unsupported encoder reports an error rather than a fake WebP download.
- The quality value is an encoder setting, not a guaranteed visual score, file size or lossless mode.
Troubleshooting
Why does my form reject the WebP?
The form may permit only JPG or PNG. Use a supported format instead of merely changing the WebP filename extension.
Why is my WebP not smaller?
Content and encoder settings matter. Compare the actual byte count and consider whether PNG, JPG or a permitted resize better suits the image.
Questions about image to webp
Is this a lossless WebP converter?
No. The exposed quality control uses the browser’s lossy WebP encoder.
Will it keep transparent pixels?
WebP output can carry transparency. Inspect edges and the downloaded file in the system that will use it.
Does it resize the image?
It keeps decoded width and height. Use Resize Image separately when you need fewer pixels.
Can it convert an animated WebP?
No. Animated inputs are rejected to avoid silently flattening the animation.
