Convert JPEG photos to PNG without another JPEG encode. Keep the decoded dimensions and understand why PNG may be larger or still show old artefacts.

How to use jpg to png
This converter changes the storage format of the pixels your browser decodes from a JPEG. PNG avoids another round of JPEG encoding, which can be useful when a publishing or form workflow specifically requests PNG. It cannot reverse existing JPEG blur, ringing or block artefacts, and photographic PNG files are often larger.
- Select the JPG you need in PNG format.
- Process the image; this converter has no JPEG-quality slider because the output is PNG.
- Compare the preview and verify that the output is image/png at the expected dimensions.
- Download the PNG only if the receiving workflow requires or benefits from that format.
A practical example
If a portal specifically requests PNG, converting a JPEG can provide that encoding at the same decoded width and height. A visible compression artefact in the JPG will still be visible in the PNG; conversion does not reconstruct its missing detail.
Supported files and limitations
- “Lossless PNG encoding” describes encoding the decoded pixels, not recovering the original camera image or preserving the JPEG byte stream.
- PNG can increase the byte size of a photograph substantially.
- This workflow does not remove a background, create transparency from white pixels or retain the source metadata.
Troubleshooting
Why did the file become much larger?
JPEG is designed for lossy photographic compression, while PNG stores decoded pixels differently. Use PNG when you need the format, not as an automatic photo-size reduction.
Why is the old blur still present?
The browser can only convert the pixels available in the JPG. Previously discarded image detail cannot be restored by choosing another encoding.
Questions about jpg to png
Will this make my JPEG sharper?
No. It changes format without another JPEG encode, but it does not recreate detail already lost.
Does PNG automatically remove the white background?
No. Existing white pixels remain white. This page is not a background-removal tool.
Does the conversion change width and height?
It retains the browser-decoded dimensions. Resize separately if your destination requires a different pixel grid.
Is PNG always the better choice?
No. JPEG or WebP may be more suitable for photographs; PNG is useful when its encoding or transparency support matches the workflow.
