Try a compact structural PDF rewrite without deliberate image downsampling. Compare actual bytes; protected-feature or non-improving inputs keep the original.

How to use optimize pdf

This optimizer tries a compact object-stream rewrite of an ordinary unlocked PDF. It does not deliberately turn pages into images or lower their image resolution. That is different from a target-KB compressor, and it is not certified preservation of every PDF feature. Detected sensitive features take the original-return path; a non-improving rewrite also returns the source unchanged.

  1. Keep your original and choose a supported PDF.
  2. Run the optimizer and read whether it produced a supported structural rewrite or returned the original.
  3. Compare actual input/output bytes and the stated savings.
  4. If a new PDF was produced, open it and inspect text, page order, orientation and appearance before replacing any copy.

A practical example

An already compact PDF may become larger when rewritten. In that case the download is the unchanged original and no saving is claimed. A PDF with a detected digital signature also keeps its original bytes rather than silently invalidating the signature.

Supported files and limitations

  • No arbitrary maximum size or guaranteed reduction is offered, and this is not a “strict lossless” or archival-certification claim.
  • Detected forms, signatures, annotations, bookmarks, attachments, tags, actions or layers cause an unchanged-original return. Unsupported encrypted/malformed documents are rejected.
  • Preserving ordinary page appearance does not prove every possible semantic feature of every PDF. Inspect important results and retain originals.

Troubleshooting

Why did I get the same file back?

The safe policy found sensitive structure or the rewrite did not reduce size. The explanation and byte report identify the unchanged-original outcome.

Can it compress a scanned PDF to a small exact KB limit?

No. This workflow does not deliberately downsample scan images and cannot promise a target size. A substantial scan-size reduction may require a different, explicitly lossy workflow.

Questions about optimize pdf

Is this guaranteed lossless PDF compression?

No. It is a guarded structural rewrite, not a universal semantic, archival or signature-preserving certification.

Will scanned pictures be intentionally downsampled?

No deliberate image downsampling is performed by this optimizer. That also means image-heavy PDFs may not shrink much.

What happens to a signed or interactive document?

When those sensitive features are detected, the original is returned unchanged rather than being rewritten.

Can an optimized result be larger?

A trial rewrite can be larger, but this workflow then returns the smaller or equal original and reports no saving.
